Rebecca Carpenter Joins DHSM as New Archivist

Rebecca Carpenter is DHSM’s new part-time librarian and archivist. She succeeds Sandra Waxman, who retired in August after 15 years in the post. Rebecca now oversees the DHSM’s 10,000-volume library and important archival materials, will respond to research requests from members and the public, and expand outreach and educational opportunities within the community and beyond.

Carpenter comes to DHSM from the Boston-based law firm Sullivan & Worcester LLP, where she worked since 2014 as archivist and library clerk. Her experience includes the South End Historical Society, the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where she currently works part time to digitize acquisitions. She brings a background in library-archives management as well as a range of accomplishments in history projects and publications. Carpenter earned an MA in 2017 from the University of Massachusetts Boston in the History/Archives Track.

“Rebecca stood out among a field of qualified candidates,” said DHSM Executive Director Johanna McBrien. “Her professional experience, communication skills, enthusiasm, and creativity made Rebecca the top pick to succeed Sandra Waxman.” Carpenter expressed excitement about her new position. “This is a wonderful opportunity for me to combine my library-archive experience with my passion for history,” she said. “I look forward to working with members and others on research into Dedham’s long history.
