Speaker John Roman, contemporary map illustrator and author of The Art of Illustrated Maps (2015 Simon & Schuster /HOW Books), discussed the popular historic city- and town-view panoramic maps of the 1800s, with particular attention on Edwin Whitefield’s (1816-1892) 1876 perspective view of Dedham, Mass., pictured as the main image.
The evolution and process of the 19th-century’s bird’s-eye-view industry was explored, as was Whitefield’s prolific career as a landscape painter, architectural illustrator, botanical artist, and lithographer. Whitefield’s legacy of recording the charm of daily life in his art and maps will be honored through this pictorial presentation.
